The next song I want to talk about briefly is Taylor Swift – We Are Never Getting Back Together, currently at number 9 on the charts. Another up-beat, fun song. It’s quite a funny song really, but ironically realistic. The part of it that interests me is “Then you come around again and say "Baby, I miss you and I swear I'm gonna change, trust me." Remember how that lasted for a day? I say, "I hate you," we break up, you call me, "I love you.” Then, “Uggg, so he calls me up and he's like, "I still love you," And I'm like... "I just... I mean this is exhausting, you know, like, We are never getting back together. Like, ever.” I think Taylor is basically explaining how confusing, silly, and in-decisive teens are about relationships. And it’s quite funny because she’s showing, in the lyrics how they exaggerate it all and makes it sound so dramatic over a relationship that’s probably lasted like 2months. I do quite like these lyrics because it’s realistic. I hear girls around the school talking about boys like that, and the thing is, I do it to. Because it is part of being a teenage girl, having teen boy dramas.
The last song I want to talk about is Labrinth ft. Emeli Sande – Beneath Your Beautiful, currently at number 1 in the charts! This recent collaboration took me by surprise but I really like it. It’s such a beautiful song that will just make you smile and think. These lyrics are about love, but not just a normal lovey-dovey song, far more deep. “You tell all the boys no Makes you feel good yeah I know you’re out of my league But that won’t scare me way out no You’ve carried on so long You couldn’t stop if you tried it You’ve built your wall so high That no one could climb it But I’m gonna try. Would you let me see beneath your beautiful Would you let me see beneath your perfect Take it off now girl, take it off now girl I wanna see inside Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight.” It’s about a guy who finds this girl who’s a challenge; she doesn’t let her guard down and doesn’t want complications such as boys in her life. She tries to block it out, but it’s difficult. Labrinth is saying no matter how big the challenge, he cares about this girl so he is going to try and climb that wall. I think it’s such a pretty song because it’s about strength and when it’s sometimes not needed; sometimes its ok t let people and emotions in. I think the reason the girl is blocking people out is probably because of something that’s happened in her past. A lot of teenagers try to put up this front, of strength and dignity. Trying not to let people to close because they’re scared. I’m like that quite a lot of the time. Because I’m afraid that attachment leads to expectations and expectations lead to disappointment. The fear of losing somebody is equal to the fear of letting somebody into your life. And I think that’s what this song is trying to explain.
Overall all of these songs have VERY different meanings and all are teen issues. There are a few other songs I would have loved to write about, Like Robbie Williams- Candy another song about putting up a front, and lack of self-esteem. And One Direction- Little Things, again about extremely un-confident self-conscious girls. All of these are big problems with teenagers and I think music really helps them I mean nothing is better than when a song describes exactly how you’re feeling.
