Firstly I’d just like to say how gosh-darn lovely Ed
Sheeran is! And his music and videos clearly match the genuine guy he is. His
newly released song Small Bump, from his album “+” along with the video, is
truly heart-achingly tragic.
Personally I really like this song, though I heard it a
few weeks back on YouTube it still pulls on my heart strings every time I hear
it. Though the video is very very simple I think that compliments the song and
makes you really listen to the lyrics, there isn’t much going on which is a
good and bad thing to be honest.
Sometimes when I watch the video I think it’s too simple,
that there could have been more to it, just something to give it a little umph.
But then I watch it again and him sitting in the waiting room is more than
enough. Though I did like the way they showed children and adults coming to the
hospital for different reasons, it made it kind of cute. I know it’s an awfully
sad song, but whilst he was singing and the little girl runs in it was kind of
nice in a way.
His dress sense in all his videos is pretty similar but I
like it. I think it suits him a lot. His casual hoodie, jeans and trainers are
nice. I don’t think it would suit him going round in a slim-fit suit or taking
his shirt off dancing around. I like his style, it’s who he is and I sincerely
hope it doesn’t change too much as his career carries on.
Also I think it’d be good to mention some of the powerful
lyrics to the song. I really liked when he sang “Fingernails the size of a half
grain of rice, eyelids closed to be soon open wide” though he’s singing it in
quite a solemn blank expression I think he’s excited that he’s going to have a
baby, he describes in detail the little features he can’t wait to see and how
he can’t wait for his child to open its eyes for the first time.
One of the other lyrics I think really shows that he
wrote the song and he is involved in it is “Might be left with my hair but
you’ll have your mother’s eyes” I think that lyric is just adorable. Because
he’s ginger and a lot of people are really rude about that he’s basically
saying , ‘hey yeah I’m your dad and
you’re probably gonna get my ginger locks, but you’ll have your mothers eyes’ He’s
probably one of the only really real
and pure people in the music industry. Obviously I’ve never met him but he
seems just amazing. His songs always do make my heart skip a beat.
The last lyric I’m going to comment on is one of the last
one’s in the song “You were just a small bump unborn, four months and torn from
life” clearly this is saying how his child has passed and gone to heaven. It’s
an extremely sad ending to a beautiful song but it’s sadly realistic, as this
kind of thing does happen to people un-fortunately often. I think Ed was trying
to really connect and help people who have gone through this kind of situation.
I don’t know what could’ve compelled him to write such a song as most of
song-writing comes from experience, I really hope he hasn’t experienced
anything like this.
Overall I really do love this song and the video was a
nice touch. I think it’ll be very popular for a long time.
